FIRST PANDEMIC

I was a U.S. Army lieutenant during the Korean War in the 1950s when the first pandemic hit us. It was the Asian flu and it was devastating because we had no natural immunity to it. The army first tried ‘half-killing’ the virus and injecting that into us. That only made the Asian flu worse and led to a wider outbreak. Then the army totally killed the virus and injected that into us, and that gave us the needed natural immunity to the virus.
